Abstrak

The cooling method that is commonly used in the turning process today is the wet machining method. However, this metod has many drawbacks including, the work area becoming dirty, can cause corrosion on the product, consuming 16% to 20% of production costs and can have a negative impact on the environment and operator health. So that the cooling medium used in this study is the dry machining method and MQL methods by utilizing the air-fluid produced by the fan chip as a cooling medium. To know how the influence of the use of a fan chip on the tool life and surface roughness of AISI 4140 in the CNC turning process. The working principle of this fan chip is that the fan chip is paired separately with the milling machine using a stand fan, the fan housing as the fan motor mount and the heat absorber as an additional cooling medium. The research was carried out by experimental testing and approach methods using the Taylor equation to find tool life. The eksperimental process on AISI 4140 using a single point cutting tool with carbide material. It affects the maximum temperatur of the dry machining method in the turning process with a depth of 3 mm with a spindle rotation speed of 2000 Rpm, the result of temperatur is ± 519 oC. Whereas the MQL method uses a fan chip of ±485 oC. The increase in MQL tool life value using a fan chip that occurs is ±1.5 minutes or 20% compared to the dry machining method. The maximum decrease in surface roughness was at a spindle speed of 2000 Rpm at a depth 3 mm, namely 1.99 µm. Key Word: MQL, Fan Chip, Turning, Tool Life, AISI 4140.
